Box Elder tree is a fast-growing tree that grows up to 10–25 metres tall. The leaves of the Box Elder are compound, consisting of three to seven leaflets. The leaflets are elongated and have serrated margins. The color of the leaves can vary, ranging from bright green to a bluish-green hue. In some instances, the leaves may turn yellow in Autumn, but they are not known for significant fall coloration.
In early spring, the Box Elder produces clusters of small, greenish-yellow flowers. The flowers are not particularly showy. Following the flowers, the tree develops winged samaras, which are paired seeds with papery wings. These samaras are often present on the tree throughout the summer and early fall before being dispersed by wind.
The Box Elder is known for its tolerance of different soil types and growing conditions. It can thrive in wet areas, including floodplains and along riverbanks, as well as in drier upland sites. It can also adapt to both full sun and partial shade.
