Also known as Gomphrena Strawberry Fields, Makhmali, Vadamalli and Rudrakshi Hoova, Globe Amaranth - Strawberry Fields is an edible, old fashioned cottage garden plant native to Texas and Mexico, where it grows to 60cm and copes with hot, humid summers. An annual plant similar to clover, it has everlasting, extraordinary strawberry red blooms continuously through midsummer until the first frost. The flowers make an excellent dried flower and add colour to any cut flower arrangement. This plant is popular in landscape design and cutting gardens for its vivid colors and color retention.
Medicinal Properties
Besides being a charming ornamental plant, Gomphrena is reputed to have a number of beneficial health benefits. Practitioners of folk medicine claim that is has antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, detoxifying and purifying properties. It has long been used in folk medicine to treat a variety of illnesses such as diabetes, coughs, and urinary retention. Of its many purported health benefits, it is perhaps best known historically for its use in treating hypertension.
